Back in Alaska again!

well, for me at least. reba and i are trying to stay warm and dry in a seward, alaska during a very moist season. it's out last stop on this tour, and we're feeling it. we've been busy wrapping up our classes and ushering our students back into life after the boat. it's been good having a hand in making a program from start to finish.

EXIT glacier - 10 years ago when i was a wee 22 year old i visited this little spot, climbed up the side of a hill to get a better look of the ice field, and lost my hat to hurricane force winds. at that time 4 years of college life had withered my body into a fat greasy mess. so, i was unable to chase after it. today, i'm prepared to go back (maybe) and retrieve it.

at the very least it's good to be back in this beautiful place. even though it will be for only a half a day.

Hello, my name is Kendra and currently my husband and I are teaching in Fukuoka on the JET program. I've just stumbled across your blog searching for more information in peace boat, and it looks like you guys are having a blast! We're interested in applying for peace boat after we're done with JET next year. I know you're busy exploring glaciers and such, but if you have a free moment, I'd love to hear about the application process, how competitive you found it, and your work level on board. My blog is kyushuchronicles.wordpress.com if you're interested in purusing more of who I am. Keep up the good postings! I do love to hear about a good adventure!

sorry it has taken me so long to write back. as you can probably imagine we have been going non-stop. this is my first chance to sit down and write this. i guess the best way to explain my experience with the application process is through list form.

1. peace boat was a little apprehensive about taking a couple. they rated each applicant on his/her character, ability to work with a diverse group, and ideas for contributing to the upcoming cruise. they are mostly worried that a couple would not mesh well with the group.

2. if you get through to the interview stage, you'll have to do a demo lesson. for me it was a little challenging b/c i had to show a complete lesson in 10 min that had some kind of global content. some things to consider are a).usefulness for the students regarding what they will experience on the cruise, b). introducing or reinforcing some kind of global/international component to the lesson, and c). making it interesting for lower-level students.

3. the interview can be a little intense. i guess this is b/c the 3-months will be equally if not more intense. peace boat needs to carefully screen its applicants. a lot of things that helped us was our experience in japan (7 years). you will be working with mostly japanese people on the boat in their lingua franca.

good luck. if you have any other questions, please feel free to write in.
